The
wine cellars of CAVAS MONASTELL lie in the
heart of the town of Sant Sadurni d'Anoia, the capital of Cava Country
in the wine-growing region of El Panedes and 35 km southwest of
Barcelona.
Awash with underground wine cellars, this unique town is home to
90% of the production of over 190 millon bottles of CAVA a year.
Its privileged geographical location with a typically Mediterranean
climate has converted this area into one of Europe's main quality
sparkling wine producing regions.
Some 26,000 hectares in El Penedes are currently given over to the
cultivation of grapevines, and the area can be divided into three
specific microclimates:
|
El Bajo Penedès, (or Lower Penedes) , which has
a hot climate and lies along the coastal region, where the Mediterranean
Sea makes its strongest mark.
|
El Penedès Central, (or Central Penedes), a pre-shore
area with plains and valleys with an altitude of 200 to 400 metres.
|
El Penedès Superior, (or Upper Penedes), an inland
area where woodland and hills up to 800 metres above sea level give
personality to the vineyards.
|
|
Such
climatic diversity means we can select the best varieties from each
area for producing our wines and cavas.
We select the native varieties of Xarel-lo, Macabeo and Perellada,
for making CAVA and foreign varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon,
Merlot y Chardonnay for our wines.
